2011 Elvstrom-Zellerbach Regatta and District 24 Championship – April 16-17

Posted by admin on 05 Apr 2011 | Tagged as: General Posts, Upcoming Events

The 2011 Elvstrom Regatta, and District 24 Championship for Standard, Radial and 4.7 rigs, is now less than two weeks away! This year’s event will be huge as it may be the only regatta on the City Front before this Summer’s 4.7 and Master Worlds. As such, its going to be a great training event for all the sailors who plan to race this Summer. For those that are too old, or too young to sail this Summer, the Elvstrom Regatta will be a great opportunity to race in some large and competitive fleets!

The first Elvstrom Regatta was run in 1975 (I recall that it was one year after the first NorCal and Boomer is the first name on that trophy – in 1974). San Francisco was the center of the then Laser universe, home to the top sailors in the world, the likes of John Bertrand, Chris Boome, Jeff Madrigali, Steve Jeppeson, Russ Silvestri, etc. Don Trask created the Elvstrom intending to create an enduring top level event at the St Francis Yacht Club and for the very first regatta none other than the events namesake, Paul Elvstrom, came to sail in a Laser for the first time. After only one day of practice in a new boat (to him) he went out and finished second overall in what might have been the best fleet in the world at the time – losing first overall in the last race to, fittingly, a St Francis Junior sailor!

This year’s event will also have some big names sailing and some of the top level Masters sailors from around the world.

The event organizers are expecting a big turnout and are using this event to hone their skills for this Summer’s racing. Because the tides for the Elvstrom weekend are predicted to be strong, and with a Spring runoff enhanced ebb, they will not be attempting to run trapezoids off the face of Alcatraz, instead evaluating a windward-leeward style course that is a candidate replacement for the trapezoids this Summer. Still, expect course lengths similar to the world championship courses this Summer and top level committee work.

The Notice of Race for the event is available on the St Francis Yacht Club website at http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/3932/2011EZNORFinal.pdf

Online registration is also open at https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_registration_form.php?regatta_id=3932 and note that since this is the District 24 Championship you MUST be a current member of the Laser Class to sail (membership will be verified during registration). Note that a $25 late fee kicks in if you register AFTER April 13 so don’t hesitate, get your entry in as soon as possible!

You can check on the growing entry list by going to http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_registrant_list.php?regatta_id=3932&custom_report_id=2

2010 StFYC Fall Dinghy Regatta – register now!

Posted by Ralph on 21 Oct 2010 | Tagged as: General Posts

The 2010 sailing season is wrapping up with the St Francis Yacht Club’s
annual Fall Dinghy Regatta the final big event of the year. This year’s
Fall Dinghy will be held the weekend of October 23-24 and if today’s
weather is an indicator, promises to again be filled with warm sunshine
and lighter than normal breeze. As is customary, for the Fall Dinghy the
club is planning for 6 races, three each day, with racing along the City
Front right in front of the club. We’ll be sharing the water with 18
footers, 49ers, 29ers, 5o5’s, FD’s, Finns and Weta’s and to accommodate
everyone they are planning two course areas – one for the “fast” boats,
one for the “slow”. In addition, we’ll be looking at the standard post
race party on saturday with plenty of food and beverages. All for only $55!

This year’s tides have us on the “small” flood to “big” ebb transition
which will make for interesting racing – especially for the downwind
experts!

The Fall Dinghy Regatta will also serve as the Laser 4.7 District 24
Championship – the Grand Prix event for our district. This will enable
Laser 4.7 sailors to earn Grand Prix points which will help determine
which qualification category they fall into for the 2011 Laser 4.7
Worlds next summer here in San Francisco. To have a fleet we need 6
Laser 4.7’s to register, right now we have 3. We should be able to get
10 on the water racing so be sure to get the word out to the 4.7 sailors
you know to sign up now!
